Georgia Ranks Fourth in the Nation for Fatal Crashes Involving Commercial Vehicles

According to recent statistics, our state ranks fourth in the nation for fatal crashes involving commercial vehicles.

This week the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) of the Georgia Department of Public Safety is taking preventative measures to reduce the amount of fatal crashes caused by semi-trucks in Georgia. The Department announced a 72-hour multi-state enforcement campaign targeting unsafe commercial vehicle drivers who are driving recklessly, driving while impaired, speeding, texting while driving, following too closely or driving while fatigued.

According to the MCCD, "Officers will also be inspecting commercial vehicles and their drivers at inspection sites. Officers will not hesitate to issue out of service orders and citations to drivers found to be a safety hazard." MCCD officers will also hand out educational materials about safe driving at select Welcome Centers throughout Georgia.

This week's campaign covers almost 180 miles of I-85 in Georgia and will no doubt have a positive impact on making that stretch of the highway safer.

However, it is impossible for patrols to reach every commercial driver in Georgia, and the campaign does not even begin to cover the overcrowded I-75 corridor that passes through Stockbridge and McDonough in Henry County.
