April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

As personal injury attorneys south of Atlanta, we have seen firsthand the damage caused by distracted driving, and we work hard every day to help the victims recover compensation for medical injuries and other damages.   We also work to educate the communities we serve about effective ways to prevent car accidents.

We’re not alone. For the first time in Georgia history, we are excited to announce the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association has partnered with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to declare April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month.  As part of this effort, Georgia Trail Lawyers will be making an educational presentation to new and future drivers in schools across the state.

The presentation, entitled “EndDD,” includes salient points such as:

  • Nationwide, nearly 4,000 people are killed and another 421,000 injured each year as a result of distracted driving-related crashes

  • In Georgia, there were approximately 8,580 distracted driving incidents that resulted in 3,298 injuries and 19 deaths in 2014.

  • Text messaging while driving means you are 23 times more likely to crash.

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that driver distraction is the primary cause of almost 20 percent of all fatal crashes.

  • A nationwide survey by the CDC found 69 percent of drivers age 18-64 talk on their cellphone while driving, and 31 percent read or send text messages while driving.

By sharing this information at every opportunity - through presentations, social media and our blog – we are hoping that drivers think twice before texting, dialing or whatever activities may distract them from focusing on the most important task at hand: driving.  In addition to eliminating distractions in your own car, you can stress the importance to loved ones and drive defensively.
