Medical Mistakes Now #3 Leading Cause of Death in U.S.

A new study reveals that medical mistakes should now be classified as the third leading cause of death in America, right behind heart disease and cancer.  The recent study estimates more than 250,000 deaths every year in the United States are due to medical errors, with the disclaimer that the number may actually be much higher because nursing home deaths are not included in that total.  Medical mistakes leading to death can include a wide variety of actions, ranging from simple things such as a medication mix-up or a communications breakdown to more complex mistakes made during surgery.   Some doctors and nurses have bad habits that lead to recurring problems with patient care, and some incidents are isolated mistakes.
